The simple explanation is, anything that works for you is great. After all, this is a tool that is meant to make you successful; a vehicle that will help you achieve what you want in life. If you actually use it. You will use your PLLL if it’s convenient for you to do so. With this in mind, here are some guidelines.
Written Format
Most of the suggestions here are just that, suggestions. This one is not a suggestion. It is not a PLLL if it is not in a written form. It simply does not work if you think that you will be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish without putting down your thoughts in writing. How you write them down, where you write them down, when you do so, these are all up for grabs, except the written part. If you want to call this a rule, go ahead.
I’ve been working with people on this topic, in various forms for 30 plus years. I can honestly say that there has not been anyone who has been successful using this concept that has not written down their material in one fashion or another, in their PLLL. I realize that success is a relative term so let me clarify this point. My definition of success is achieving as close as possible to maximum benefits using whatever tool we are talking about. For example, if you should achieve a savings of 50%, but do not follow the system as diligently as you could have and only realize savings of 30%, still good but not 50%, then I personally do not deem you to be successful. If you read this material about creating your own PLLL and start to pay more attention to your planning and Prioritizing, you will of course benefit from this new direction and focus. Benefiting from an exercise and reaping the maximum benefits from that exercise is two entirely different outcomes.
Physical Layout
Once again, your choice. There are two camps, my way and the new way. I am an unabashed non-techie person. I DO NOT OWN a cell phone, I repeat; DO NOT OWN a cell phone. So that means no Crackberry and it's many derivatives. Yes, I DO OWN a computer, actually 2 of them. I use a Day Planner, which is paper based. I use it because I’m most comfortable using it and whatever method you use to lay out your PLLL, it must be what works best for you. If it’s not easy to access, easy to use and above all, functional for you, then it will fail you in the long run. Keep in mind, this is not some form of academic exercise, this is a tool that will be indispensable to you and your chances of really making what you want to happen actually happen. Those are pretty high stakes.
So pretty early on in this process, you need to decide if you are going to go the old way, paper based, or new way, computer based. I will not go into details here why I believe paper based is the far superior way to go, especially with this tool, but I will spend a line or two on it, and then move on. You will be constantly adding, subtracting and massaging your PLLL. To do this and to do it easily, I find paper based is the route to go. One last point, part of the process of building your PLLL is Prioritizing, ranking, looking at two objectives and deciding which one stays and which one goes, these processes are made for a paper based layout.
Okay, enough said, pick your method. Whichever one you choose, you need to be able to do these functions.
• Add new thoughts, ideas, suggestions to your self, memos, quickly and easily.
• Set up headings, new sections, create files, quickly and easily.
• Be able to move ideas, topics, files around within your layout, quickly and easily.
• Have a system that allows you to move an idea from the back of your PLLL and put it in the front, a ranking system that allows you freedom to pull out an idea and mull it over, look at, and then decide to put it back into your PLLL, so you can find it again and repeat the process until you are finished with it, keep in mind this process can and will be repeated over months and years. It's an ongoing, never-ending process; remember this is your power LIVING LIFE list. As long as you are Living, your Life List will be evolving and changing as your circumstances change.
• Your PLLL will be 24/7; you should have a layout that gives you access to it whenever and wherever you are. When an idea pops into your head, you want a system that will allow you to harvest that idea and get it into your PLLL, in a written form.
These two suggestions (make that one rule and one suggestion), are a start to you creating your own PLLL.
This is a tool that is meant to make you successful; a vehicle that will help you achieve what you want in life. If you actually use it.
